She came from the ocean,
this wild girl from the sea,
her hair flowing southward,
she walked toward me.
A west to east smile,
with eyes steely gray,
like a storm in the distance,
rolling in from the bay.
We kissed with the sunrise,
made love when it set,
a promise by moonlight,
came dawn, my regret.
He left for the ocean,
this boy from the land,
his spirit soars northward,
his heart in her hands.

This piece reminds me of one of my favorite pastimes: taking a day trip to the beach. My best friend and i frequent California’s coast to steal some precious time in the sun, with the waves roaring ahead of us, the cool ocean wind tousling our hair. My boyfriend is not a huge fan of the beach, but he will visit with me every once in a while because he knows it is one of my happy places. The free-spirited vibes induced by the poem resonate with me quite personally.
In Dirty Pretty Things, Michael Faudet writes a poetic novel detailing dark and romantic memories from the past in the male gaze perspective. Expect more blog posts featuring quotes from the novel as i continue to read it- it is quite beautiful! π₯
